Is a Sumi Ink portrait in black and white only?
Yes. Everything is drawn in black ink and ink wash on white paper, with no color. Darker skin is shown with deeper washes and lighter skin with lighter ones, so each person keeps their own tone. Light hair is drawn as fine lines on the paper rather than filled in.
Which photos work best for an ink portrait?
Clear, well-lit photos where each face is easy to see, ideally two or three per person from slightly different angles. Glasses, beards and hairstyles carry through to the drawing. Busy backgrounds do not matter, because the drawing keeps the background as open white paper.
How is my piece made?
With AI. Image models create new artwork from your photos and details, guided by styles our team designs and tests. No one reviews it before you do, so what you see on the page is what we print.
What happens to my photos?
We use them only to create your pieces. They stay private to you and are sent to Google's Gemini image service to generate the artwork. Photos you add but never submit are deleted after 7 days.
Do the photos need to be taken together?

How many people can be in the portrait?
Up to the card limit on the form — enough for a large family including pets. The form shows how many people and pets fit in one portrait.
Can our dog be in the family portrait?
Yes. Add your dog — or your cat — as a card of its own, with one to three clear photos of its face, and it appears in the portrait beside everyone else, in the same style. A pet takes a card just like a person, so it counts toward the same limit.
