Aim for a single piece (or balanced pair) totalling roughly two-thirds the sofa's width. For an 84-inch 3-seat sofa that's a single 30x40 or 36x48 canvas, or a balanced pair of 24x36s. Hang the bottom of the frame 6-10 inches above the sofa back so the art reads as part of the seating zone.

It's the safest single choice. Abstracts don't tie the room to a specific subject (no animals, place, or era), so they survive furniture and palette changes better than figurative work. The two pitfalls are scale (going too small) and busyness (too many gestures in one piece). Large and restrained wins.

Canvas works best unframed (gallery-wrap) for a clean contemporary look. Paper prints behind glass want a slim black, oak, or unfinished-wood frame; ornate frames fight abstract gesture. Frameless canvas pulls forward off the wall by 1.5 inches and reads sculptural — exactly what most abstracts want.

Tonal abstracts in the room's existing palette anchor without changing the mood — soft cream, oat, taupe, charcoal. If you want the abstract to lift the room, pick one accent colour from the existing palette and choose an abstract that uses it as the dominant gesture. Don't introduce a third palette.
